Banbury Under 15s Girls versus Barkers Butts
By Simon Grieve
On a hideous day - so wet and cold that it sent most boys teams running for the showers and food! - the U15s girls turned out to put on a show.
Well at least the away team did! Banbury were missing a few players and others did not show, so Banbury had to start with 6 players against 7.
Banbury started the brighter with some great driving and off-loading, but Barker Butts were equal to the physicality and tackled very well and used their experience of tag rugby as they took advantage on 3 occasions to use the overlap and score 3 tries.
But just before half time Kirstin Boomer stole an opposition line out and was away before anyone could react and scored to keep Banbury in the game.
Barker Butts quickly scored 2 more tries after the break as tackling let Banbury down, but the home side stepped up the tempo and Butts went a player down. With the teams now 6 versus 6 Banbury drove well with Dickinson and Askew pulling in tacklers, and as Ellie Tyrtania stormed through she knocked off 2 tacklers and knocked back a third to score.
This saw the Coventry outfit lose another player, though their side-lined player returned and immediately stole up Banbury’s blind side to make the score 10 -30. Finally Banbury got their rewards as Poppy Heritage forced 3 passes backwards and pounced on the 3rd to strip the ball and score.
Banbury scored one more as Emily Hughes picked up and dived into the corner to finish the game.
It was a great credit to all the girls for defeating the weather and putting on a fantastic show, which despite the biting cold saw very few knock ons or mistakes.
